It is with tremendous sadness that we share the passing of our exoneree Letitia "Teri" Smallwood. Teri passed last week, surrounded by her loving family, after suffering complications from surgery. Teri spent over 42 years in prison for an arson/murder conviction based on an outdated, unreliable fire investigation. The fire should never have been determined to be an arson. Convicted in 1972, Teri spent the next four decades fighting for justice, and anyone who met her could tell you that the word "fighter" defined her. Teri had almost five years at home with her family, during which she was able to travel, volunteer at her local church, and be there for the births of her great-niece and great-nephew. One of the highlights of Teri's time at home was attending the 2019 Innocence Network conference in Atlanta. At this time, we would also like to express our gratitude to our board member Joshua Snyder, for his tremendous dedication to Teri through the years. In 2015, the year Teri was released, we honored Josh with the Edward D. Ohlbaum Volunteer Award for his work on Teri's case. Teri's obituary and details regarding services can be found here. Please join us in keeping Teri's family in your thoughts.
